Who is XE1KK?

Ramón’s interest in amateur radio began many years ago when he was about 4 or 5 years old following his uncle Bill's (ex XE1AAW, now XE1ZW) good example.  After his first QSO as a "second operator" at XE1AAW his father gave him a pair of 27 MHz handheld radios, since then he has been hooked on radio.

He got his first license, XE1RL, in 1979; change to XE1XMT in 1984 and finally got his actual call, XE1KK, in 1992. He is also VA7UU and WT2T.

Ramón is an active DXer on HF SSB, HF QRP, Satellite, 50 MHz and on the low bands.  He the only Mexican station with DXCC on all modes: Mixed, Phone, CW, RTTY, Satellite and QRP. He also holds DXCC on most bands: 10, 12, 15, 17, 20, 30, 40 and 80. He has the first Satellite DXCC, the first 30 MHz DXCC and the highest DXCC Challenge score in Mexico.

He enjoys contesting both as a single operator and as a member of a multi operator team like: XE1RCS, HC8N, FP/VE7SV, ES9C, XX9C, 6G1KK, 4C2X, HC8A, 6D2VHF, and PW5U during WRTC2006 in Brazil.

His interests also include IOTA activations and he has been active from several of them.  In México this include Cozumel (NA-090) as 6H3KK in 2001, Isla Lobos (NA-221) first time activation as a team member of XF2RCS in 2001, Tamalcab Island (NA-200) as XF3T team member in 2004 and XE1KK/XF3 on Isla Mujeres (NA045) in 2006.

Since 1996 he owns a very popular beacon: XE1KK/B on 50.023 MHz. (QRT at the present)

He was the founding president of Grupo DXXE, a group that includes Mexico’s top contesters and very active DXers.  He is also a very proud member of Radio Club Satélite in Mexico City, BCDXC from British Columbia, Canada, the Galapagos Radio Sociedad and the 4M5DX group from Venezuela.  He firmly believes that the best part of amateur radio are the friends you finally meet personally.

Other group affiliations include ARRL and AMSAT both as a Life Member and FMRE, RAC and RSGB.

Ramón has finished also his DXCC “on foot”.  He has visited 100 DXCC entities including some of the “most wanted” like North Korea, Yemen and Bhutan.  He has operated radio from 33 of them (A4/XE1KK, 9K2/XE1KK, TF/VE7RKK, OX/VE7RKK, CT3/VE7RKK, MU/VE7RKK, HC8/XE1KK, TI5/XE1KK, TG9/XE1KK, LU/XE1KK, CX/XE1KK, OH0/VE7RKK, PJ7/VE7RKK, FS/VE7RKK, HK1/XE1KK, XX9TKK to name a few.)
